  1. ICCAD debate: Multicore disaster or opportunity?

    Is the move to multicore processors and parallel computing a great new opportunity, or is it the "end of the world" as one panelist said at the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) Nov. 6? A spirited debate followed a talk by computer pioneer Gene Amdahl, whose "Amdahl's law" predicts the performance capability of parallel computing systems.

    Today’s computing systems are migrating rapidly from parallel bus I/O to serial I/O interconnects, and such interconnects will be key enablers of the terascale computers that will process trillions of instructions per second, according to speakers at a "Designers’ Perspective" session at the International Conference on Computer Aided Design (ICCAD). Speakers discussed the complexity of high-speed serial I/O design, along with the demands that it imposes on EDA tools and models.

  4. PDF CEO calls for restricted layouts

    Designer "freedom" has become too costly, said John Kibarian, president and CEO of PDF Solutions, in an International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) keynote speech Nov. 8. To manufacture ICs at 32 nm and below, he argued, chip layouts must be restricted to a handful of pre-characterized, regular patterns.

  5. Simulink gears up for parallel simulations

    Tapping into the growing use of multicore and multi-processor platforms, The Mathworks this week (Nov. 12) is introducing an automated capability that helps engineers distribute independent simulation runs of Simulink models across multiple processors. The capability comes with a new version of SystemTest, an optional test management and analysis tool for Simulink and Matlab.
